FG saves N200bn from ‘ghost workers’ in 2016
The Presidency on Tuesday said the Federal government has saved N200
billion by eliminating 50,000 ghost workers from its payroll in 2016.
A total of N13 billion has been taken off the payroll monthly from February to December this year.
Speaking with State House correspondents on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said 11 persons championing the syndicate of ghost workers have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He said: “The flagship program of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to rid the system of fraud and instill good governance is on course. Through a notable initiative, the Efficiency Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance, the government has embarked on the continuous auditing of the salaries and wages of government departments.
“When the Committee was constituted in February 2016, federal government monthly salary bill was N151 billion excluding pensions. Now the monthly salary warrant is N138 billion, excluding pensions. Which means that the government is making a monthly saving of about N13 billion. That is from February 2016 to date.

Police arrest 36 suspected cultists over driver’s murder
Edo State Police Command said it has arrested 36 suspected cultists
over the Christmas Day killing of a commercial bus driver in Benin City.
The identity of the victim could not be verified at time of filing this report.
The state Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu, who confirmed the arrest, said investigation would fish out the main culprit.
Gwandu said the killing was cult related.
He spoke after commercial bus drivers in Benin City protested the killing of their colleague.

Sambisa conquest: Governors, IBB, others hail Buhari, military
Governors, former military President Ibrahim Babangida and other
Nigerians have hailed President Muhammadu Buhari and troops for routing
out terrorist-sect Boko Haram from its last stronghold in the Sambisa
Forest also known as Zero Camp, at the weekend.
President Buhari at the weekend announced the takeover of the Forest by
the military. He described the fall of the camp after an offensive by
troops as the “final crushing of Boko Haram”.
Gen. Babangida saluted the courage and determination of the President
,the military and other security personnel for their sacrifice which
guaranteed the liberation of Sambisa Forest.
In a statement, which he personally signed, Gen. Babangida said:
“May I rejoice with the government and Nigerians on the successful
dislodging of Boko Haram from their base in Sambisa. It is a sign of
relief that the military has finally smoked out Boko Haram terrorists
from their notorious enclave of Sambisa Forest.
“President Muhammadu Buhari and the military are capable of crushing any challenge of the territorial integrity of Nigeria.”
48 shops engulfed by fire in Gombe market
No
fewer than 48 shops and properties worth millions of Naira were on
Tuesday burnt to ashes at Gombe old Market as a result of a fire
incident.
Malam Mohammad Abba, Chairman of the market told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident occurred in the night, adding that the cause of the fire had not been identified.
He said that about 300 shop owners lost their goods to the inferno.
According to him, some of the shops consist of various goods, while the shops occupy by some tailors were also affected by the inferno.
He advised the shop owners to take it as an act of God and to be careful in handling everything that had to do with electricity.

Nigerians urged to patronise domestic gas
The Managing Director, Gas Aggregation
Company of Nigeria, Mr Morgan Okwoche, an engineer has called on
Nigerians to make use of domestic gas to increase revenue for the
Federal Government.
He also called for its promotion among Nigerians.
Mr. Okwoche made the call yesterday at
the presentation of an honourary award of excellence on him by the
National Association of Northern Nigeria Students in Abuja.
“Petroleum experts have it that
Nigeria is a gas province with little oil in it this implies that gas
has the potential to generate more revenue to the country than crude oil
both from domestic market and export,” he said.
Chief Okwoche, whose contribution to the
oil and gas sector, with special focus on domestic gas utilisation and
monetization, said he felt honoured to be a recipient of the award.

An Osun State Magistrates’ Court yesterday issued a bench warrant of arrest against the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Abdul-Rasheed Akanbi.
At its last sitting on December 2, Chief Magistrate Olusola Aluko threatened to issue the bench warrant of arrest if Oba Akanbi failed to appear before him in compliance with the court order on November 25 in a case filed against him by the Oluwo of Iwo-Oke, Oba Kadiri Adeoye.
Oba Adeoye was in court but Oba Akanbi sent another monarch, Ologburo of Ogburo, Oba Asimiyu Sadiq, to represent him.
His absence drew the anger of Magistrate Aluko.
